When her baby goes to college and her nest is empty, she decides to indulge herself. Pierce Aston has a hidden past…
It’s a history he’d rather forget, so Pierce is building himself a new life, with no commitments or responsibilities. F5F club provides a perfect place to find his new balance, with the bonus opportunity to admire kickboxing queen and human resources manager, Jacquie. Going to a party in disguise is right in his toolbox, as is a covert mission for seduction—but being with Jacquie is far more addictive than Pierce expects. When she admits that she only wants a fling, how far will he go to convince her to try for forever—or will his past threaten their chance of a future?

Two Days to Just One Silver Fox

Just One Silver Fox, book 8 in the Flatiron Five Fitness series of contemporary romances by Deborah Cooke, coming February 25, 2021

Just two days until Just One Silver Fox, Jacquie and Pierce’s story, is published! The pre-order is available at most portals, and don’t forget that book #1 in the series, Just One Fake Date, is free.

Here’s an excerpt:

Jacquie straightened. “You have a deal, Pierce.”
He couldn’t keep from smiling when she stood up and slid her hand in his, decisive and strong. He couldn’t resist temptation either, and gave her hand a little tug. She took the step between them, guessing exactly what his plan was and obviously having no issues with it. Her eyes shone as she placed her free hand on his shoulder, then gave him a little caress.
“I think an agreement like this should be sealed with a kiss, don’t you?” he said, watching her gaze drop to his lips.
“Definitely, but only if it’s longer than the one last night.”
Oh, there was a lot to like about a woman who told him exactly what she wanted. Pierce couldn’t wait for Jacquie to tell him more.
“I can guarantee that,” he murmured for the moment, then bent to capture her lips beneath his own.

Here’s an excerpt:

Jacquie gestured to the restaurant. “This is new. This is wonderful. I miss romance, Pierce, and I miss great sex. I don’t need more obligations and commitments and responsibilities. I don’t need someone else to take care of. I want to have fun. I want to be seduced. I want to be spontaneous and impulsive, and I don’t care if whatever happens between us lasts only a week or only a night.” She took a sip of her wine and he knew she wasn’t done. “So, if you’re looking for more than that, you should look elsewhere.”
“I consider myself warned.”
She smiled at him, those hazel eyes glowing. “Yet you’re not running for the door?”
“Of course not. You’ve issued a challenge and I’m going to take it,” he said, raising his glass. “Here’s to romance, seduction and great sex.”
“Not necessarily in that order,” she replied.
Pierce smiled and leaned closer. “I choose to accept this mission,” he murmured, touching his glass to hers and watched Jacquie’s eyes light with anticipation.

Here’s an excerpt:

On impulse, Pierce leaned across the table. “What if I promised you the most epic Valentine’s Day ever?”
Jacquie’s eyes glinting with sensual promise. “Then I’d definitely make it worth your while.”
“Second date then.”
“Looks like it.”
“I can’t say I’m disappointed.”
“Me, neither.”
They smiled at each other for one of those potent intervals and Pierce knew he had to completely ace this.

Just one week until Just One Silver Fox, Jacquie and Pierce’s story, is published! The pre-order is available at most portals, and don’t forget that book #1 in the series, Just One Fake Date, is free.

Here’s an excerpt – Jacquie and Pierce have been kickboxing:

“You have to be holding back,” Jacquie accused, hoping it wasn’t so.

Pierce’s grin caught her by surprise. “Maybe a little.” His gaze swept over her with admiration. “Maybe not as much as you think. You’re good.”

“So are you.”

“Maybe you’re the one holding back.”

“Maybe I am,” Jacquie said, then ducked the blow he’d intended to be a surprise.

She flipped him over, hearing his exhalation of laughter before he hit the mat, then he caught her around the knees with one leg and she fell down beside him. He rolled her to her back before she caught her breath, angling his weight over her and the world stopped cold.

His eyes were so green.

His mouth was so close.

The hard heat of Pierce’s body pressed Jacquie into the mat and there was nowhere else she wanted to be. She could feel his heart pounding against her own chest and smell the musk of his skin. He was studying her, as if she was a miracle, as if he couldn’t learn enough. She watched his dark lashes sweep down as his gaze fell to her mouth. He inhaled sharply and might have moved away, but Jacquie stopped that.

On impulse, she locked one arm around his neck and held him there. Pierce met her gaze, his own simmering, his every muscle taut. Even angled over her, he felt so good.

So male.

She shivered, deep down inside, and felt her body respond to his.

Then she deliberately ran the tip of her tongue across her lips.

Pierce swore under his breath, which astonished her, then he bent to brush his mouth across hers. His touch was tantalizing, a tease and a sample, a touch to leave her simmering. His gaze searched hers as he held himself over her and she realized that he was asking permission.

Her heart thundered at that. The knowledge that he was a gentleman dismissed the last of her reservations.

Jacquie rolled him to his back, and locked her mouth over his, claiming him with a kiss. Pierce didn’t hesitate. His arms closed around her like steel bands, and he welcomed her kiss. She had the sense that he was letting her have her way with him, which suited her just fine.

The kiss was amazing. Potent. Persuasive. A promise of passion to come. It was hungry and demanding, as if they couldn’t get enough of each other, as if she hadn’t been the only one wanting this to happen. It was a kiss to dream on, one to keep her warm at night and fuel her fantasies, the kind of kiss she’d been needing for years, and Jacquie never wanted it to end.

Two Weeks to Just One Silver Fox

Just One Silver Fox, book 8 in the Flatiron Five Fitness series of contemporary romances by Deborah Cooke, coming February 25, 2021

Just two weeks until Just One Silver Fox, Jacquie and Pierce’s story, is published! I’m so excited about this one, book #8 in the Flatiron Five Fitness series. The pre-order is available at most portals, and don’t forget that book #1 in the series, Just One Fake Date, is free.

These two have given me quite a ride – here’s an excerpt from the start of the book – Meesha, Sonia and Jacquie are in the Flatiron Five Fitness offices:

Sonia’s expression turned stubborn. “Maybe I’m just waiting for Mr. Right.”

“Some day your prince will come?” Meesha shook her head. “Are you really going to find him in your apartment making dinner when you get home?” She waved a hand. “You need to make something happen sometimes. Take a chance. Do something different to get different results.”

“I did!” Sonia insisted, pointing at her new tattoo.

Meesha turned on Jacquie. “And you,” she continued. “I thought you were going to go wild when your kids moved out.”

“It wasn’t as easy as I expected,” Jacquie said, feeling herself bristle.

“They’ve been gone since New Year’s,” Meesha reminded her, even though Jacquie could have told her the exact number of days. “It’s been six weeks. Haven’t you gotten any yet?”

Jacquie shook her head. As much as she’d intended to take advantage of finally having some privacy, the reality of an empty apartment was another thing. She missed her kids, their noise, their demands and their mess. She wasn’t entirely sure that she knew who she was without them around, but she’d never make Meesha understand that.

The two younger women then closed ranks together, folding their arms across their chests and staring Jacquie down.

“It’s been a long time since Mitchell died,” she insisted. “I haven’t been impulsive in years.”

“Start now,” Meesha advised.

“I’ve been making a plan.”

Meesha snorted, her opinion of that clear. “Plans, schmans,” she muttered. “It’s action that matters. How is a plan going to help you be spontaneous?”

“What kind of plan?” Sonia asked.

“I’ve been making a list of contenders,” Jacquie said. “This place is full of them. Now I have to choose the lucky candidate.”

“There’s nothing wrong with letting one choose you,” Meesha grumbled, then shook her head. “Okay. Choose now.”

Jacquie glanced out the door, just in time to see the man in the number one position on her list. He was headed across the lobby with his usual purpose, no doubt headed for the men’s change room. Right on time. He was wearing jeans and a dark T-shirt and jacket, as well as those horn-rimmed glasses that she loved. His hair was more salt than pepper, but he was in perfect shape.

Pierce was at the rock wall every Monday at six, and Jacquie had taken in the view more than once. Her heart fluttered just a little. “Okay,” she said, feeling bold. “Him.”

Sonia and Meesha leaned forward as one, looking out of the office without revealing themselves. Sonia smiled. “Pierce Aston. Good choice.”

“Mmmm hmmm,” Meesha said. “Now that’s a silver fox.”

“Not one ounce of body fat,” Sonia added.

“Rock hard abs,” Meesha said. “Probably the endurance of a man half his age. Nate said he used to be a Navy SEAL.”

“No. Really?” Sonia asked and Meesha nodded, her gaze unswerving. Sonia sighed. “Check out his butt.”

“I do,” Jacquie admitted and they laughed again.

“He looks intellectual, too,” Sonia said. “Like that hot professor at college.”

“Which hot professor?” Meesha demanded and Sonia blushed.

“Or, or, the geek who’s got more than meets the eye,” Sonia said quickly. “It’s the glasses.”

“Uh huh,” Meesha teased. “Who exactly are we discussing?”

“It doesn’t matter,” Sonia said, so red that Jacquie knew it did.

“But he has contacts for working out,” Jacquie said, hoping Meesha would give Sonia a break.

Her plan succeeded, but that meant Meesha turned her attention on Jacquie. “So, what’s stopping you from doing something about it?” she demanded. “Tick tock.”

“He seems a bit mysterious,” Jacquie admitted, instead of confessing that she’d never asked a man out before. “I don’t think he socializes much at the club. I wonder what kind of secrets he has.”

“The point of being impulsive is that you leap before you look,” Meesha noted.

“I don’t want to regret anything.”

“There you go. Playing it safe.” Meesha yawned elaborately. “No wonder this show isn’t getting off the road.”

“But you like mysteries,” Sonia noted.

“True. I don’t like surprises, though.”

“The spice of life,” Meesha insisted.

“You could check his file,” Sonia suggested.

“That would be inappropriate and a breach of policy,” Jacquie said, even though she’d thought about it.

“And who would know?” Meesha asked. “I wouldn’t tell.” She held Jacquie’s gaze in challenge.

“You could get a tattoo,” Sonia suggested.

Jacquie laughed. “No.”

“You have forty-eight hours,” Meesha said, her eyes bright with challenge. “Do something by Wednesday night’s meeting.”

“Or?” Jacquie asked.

“Or I’ll do something for you,” the younger woman threatened, looking as if she’d love it. She shook a finger at Sonia as she grabbed her pink shearling coat. “That counts for you, too.”

Jacquie wondered just what Meesha would do—then she didn’t want to think about it.

It would be better to make a move herself.

Even if she’d never done it before.

There was a first time for everything and that time was now.

2020 Summary

There have been a lot of graphics in my feed on Facebook of authors sharing the books they published in 2020. It’s inspiring to see everyone’s accomplishments, so I did a graphic of my own.

2020 new releases by Deborah Cooke (also writing as Claire Delacroix)

Pearl Beyond Price is a teensy bit of a cheat, as it was published in the last week of 2019. (I felt badly that “Claire” had no new releases in 2020.) I published the All’s Fair boxed set, but it was composed of previously published content, which doesn’t count for this graphic.

Claire also had new translations published in 2020, including The Beauty Bride in Portuguese and German, The Rose Red Bride and The Snow White Bride in Italian, and The Ballad of Rosamunde in Portuguese. I have the Spanish translation of The Crusader’s Bride but it won’t appear in stores until 2021. Claire also had a new audiobook, The Mercenary’s Bride, recorded by Tim Campbell.

The first two books shown here, Pearl Beyond Price and Just One Fake Date, were revisions and rewrites. I’ve learned that these take me longer than just writing a new book, so won’t be rushing to do any more of them. (Even though I have more Claire Delacroix books from Harlequin Historicals, they all need that kind of revision. I’m going to leave them alone for the time being.)

Another project that consumed a lot of time was repackaging books. I repackaged The Champions of St. Euphemia series, as well as Flatiron Five Fitness and Flatiron Five Tattoo. I’ll take a break from that job in 2021, too!

The obvious question is: What’s coming in 2021?

When I was traditionally published, the schedule was made a year in advance of publication and books were delivered, formatted, etc., about six months before publication. I’m trying to get back to that place without leaving too many gaps in my schedule. It’ll take me a couple of years, but I’m making progress. The big challenge with publishing is that I like to alternate between sub-genres and worlds. I think it’s necessary to my creative process, so that means that the publication of series will stretch out over time.

So far in 2021, I have two historical romances scheduled for publication, The Wolf & the Witch and One Knight’s Desire. I have two books scheduled for audiobook production: The Wolf & the Witch and The Runaway Bride. Both will be recorded by Tim Campbell. I already have a number of translations scheduled for delivery and publication in 2021: The Rose Red Bride in German, The Rose Red Bride and The Snow White Bride in Portuguese, The Ballad of Rosamunde and The Renegade’s Heart in Italian, and The Crusader’s Bride in German, too. The rest of the Champions of St. Euphemia series will be translated into Spanish, too. (As mentioned above, The Crusader’s Bride in Spanish is being published now.) Many of these translation teams will continue the series with the next book after they deliver the one currently in the works. Claire has a new boxed set coming in February, Stolen Brides, and will have a second boxed set published some time during the summer.

Just One Silver Fox, book six of Flatiron Five Fitness series of contemporary romances by Deborah Cooke

For my contemporary romances, Just One Silver Fox is scheduled already for 2021. I plan to publish Annika and Thom’s story—which is becoming longer than I’d initially expected, no surprise to any of you in that!—but won’t set a publication date for that until it’s done. I have another secret Flatiron Five project in the works, but it’s too soon to talk about that. 🙂 Of course, there’s the F5F spin-off series in Harte’s Harbor, too, but I’d like to be able to schedule the first three on a fairly rapid release, with the books being done. Ha. I’m thinking that series will likely be a 2022 launch.

For my paranormal romances, there’s nothing officially booked at this time. I’m hoping to publish the next DragonFate novel, possibly next summer, and am working on the next Incendium story, Wyvern’s Wizard. (The issue with Wyvern’s Wizard is that I suspect four princesses are going to weigh in and entangle their storylines with Peri’s, so it’s not a case of getting one book written—it’s a case of getting four books written.) I’m still having various characters weigh in about their story needing to be told next. Once The Wolf & the Witch is done, I’ll make a decision and dive in.

In the meantime, there are promotions to schedule and all the rest of the jobs that come with indie-publishing. I’m hoping to have a very productive 2021, and this is my plan at the moment. I have the spreadsheets to show for it!

An Awesome Way to Start the Day

Just One Fake Date has just gone free for the first time. After my newsletter went out yesterday, apparently a lot of people took advantage of that! I woke up this morning to discover this:

Just One Fake Date, book one of the Flatiron Five Fitness series of contemporary romances by Deborah Cooke, at #224 overall free in the Kindle store December 24, 2020

Shannyn and Tyler’s book is at #224 overall in the Kindle store, #4 in sports romance, #34 in romantic comedy and #52 in contemporary romance. Wow! Those are impressive rankings, even more impressive since there’s been no advertising to drive that. Just one newsletter and a whole lot of enthusiastic readers.

If you downloaded a copy, thank you very much! If you didn’t grab a copy yet, the book is still free.

Just One Fake Date, book one of the Flatiron Five Fitness series of contemporary romances by Deborah Cooke

Tyler McKay has a plan…
And it doesn’t include a serious relationship anytime soon. Between his day job and being a partner at Flatiron 5 Fitness, he’s busy investing in the future. But Ty knows that going stag to his sister’s wedding will encourage the family matchmakers: he needs a fake date, fast, in self-defense. When the one woman who hates him walks into F5F, Ty knows he’s found the perfect candidate—that Shannyn doesn’t play by anyone’s rules just leaves Ty wanting more…

Shannyn Hawke is done with plans and dreams…
She had her whole life mapped out, but it all went wrong. Now, she’s taking care of number one and living in the moment, with no concern for the future. If her college crush wants to trade a fake wedding date for physical satisfaction, Shannyn is in. But just one night proves that Tyler is everything she believes a guy should be, plus he takes it as a challenge to change her mind about him. Shannyn never wants to have her heart broken again, but she’s falling hard and fast. Can she remember that it’s just for show? Or will Tyler convince Shannyn to take a chance on forever again?

“JUST ONE FAKE DATE is a story of family, friendships, business and love; of heart break and revelations; of acceptance and hope The premise is engaging and inviting; the characters are stubborn, quirky, and energetic; the romance is spicy and moving.”

—The Reading Cafe

N.B. Just One Fake Date is NOT Simply Irresistible with a new cover and title. It’s a new book for Tyler, with a new heroine, different tropes and a new story. Some of the scenes with the partners are similar, but this is a different book and a new series starter. The rest of the books in the series have been updated as a result of this change.

Deborah Cooke decided to re-write the first book of the Flatiron Five Fitness with a new female lead for Tyler, Shannyn Hawke, with a whole new plot. Shannyn is a freelance photogapher who went to college with Tyler and she has a job to cover the alumni who own Flatiron Five Fitness. From the moment she walks into his office, sparks fly and the story vibe was a lot different from the original book.  I liked it a lot. I liked the chemistry between Shannyn and Tyler, I enjoyed watching Tyler fight for a real relationship with her, and the passion was great between the two.  The original book had Tyler playing two characters, him and a BDSM character with Amy and I just didn’t like how Amy had difficulty seeing how Tyler is the man for her.  In this one, Shannyn had commitment issues, and I liked that conflict better. Tyler had to fight to prove to her that a relationship could work and that he wasn’t going anywhere. There was no need for any subterfuge in this one and I loved how the story flowed and concluded. Overall, so much better start to a series that was awesome!”

Married young and widowed soon after, Jacquie can’t remember a time that she wasn’t defending and protecting someone. When her baby goes to college and her nest is empty, she decides to indulge herself. Attending the F5F Valentine’s Day “come disguised as your favorite superhero” party seems like the perfect solution—but the better one is taking “Superman” home for the night, knowing exactly who is behind the mask.

When she decides to help him by unravelling his secrets, will Pierce be able to deny his perceptive new lover, even to defend those he is sworn to protect?
