Excerpts

Do you read excerpts before deciding to buy books?

If so, where do you read them? On the author’s website? Or on the portal where you’re shopping? Do you prefer to read them on an author website than to download samples, or the other way around?

I’m trying to decide whether to add excerpts to the book pages here on the evolving amalgamated website. It’s not that much trouble to do so—it’ll just take time to do it for 50 books—but I don’t think it looks as elegant as would be ideal. OTOH, if a taste of the book helps you decide whether you want more, I’m happy to add them. It is easy to read text with this theme.

Let me know what you think. 🙂

I will read them anywhere they are posted. To me, they let me know whether or not I will like the book before I purchase. And sometimes, when I think I am not really going to like a book, the excerpts actually change my mind!

    1. Thanks Phyllis!

That’s what excerpts are supposed to do. 🙂 I’m thinking I will add them in, because it’s easy to not read them if someone doesn’t want to. If they aren’t there, though, there’s no choice.

  2. If it is a new-to-me author, I occasionally read an excerpt on the portal where I am buying to check for any glaring grammatical or word-usage errors that will bug me if I read the book. (i.e. using ‘taunt’ for ‘taut’ etc) When I go to an author’s website, I am usually already familiar with their work, and never read excerpts.
Most often, no matter where I am I depend heavily on the book blurb.

  3. Hi Deb,

Yes excerpts play a big part in whether I purchase a book or not, most times I read them on the portal where I am buying the book from. But if I find a new author I like I will check out excerpts on their websites to see if I’d like other books or series by that particular author. I’d say go with adding them!!
