I mentioned this in the Comments last week – replying to Margaret M. – but since it could be easily overlooked there, I’ll mention it again.
The Dragonfire books are getting longer. KISS OF FIRE was about 93,000 words long and it was tough to pack in everything that I wanted to include. That’s a pretty tight word count for action, adventure, world building and romance.
KISS OF FURY came in at about 120,000 words. I was worried that it was too long but couldn’t figure out what to leave out. My editor couldn’t think of anything to take out either – between us, we cut one paragraph from the whole book – so we agreed to leave the length as it stood.
KISS OF FATE is about 115,000 words in length – I tried to keep it taut, but there was (again) a whole lot to include in the story.
I was worried that the type would end up being small, because the house might set the book to fit into the same number of finished pages as the first book. I really hate reading books with small squishy type and/or narrow margins. So, we talked about it, and my editor agreed with me – the end result is that NAL will keep the same typesetting format for all three books. This means that KISS OF FURY and KISS OF FATE will be thicker than KISS OF FIRE.
But – here’s the good bit – they’ll also have the same price point. Yippee!
btw, I’ve added a new category to the blog today, called Dragonfire, for all Dragonfire-related posts. I should get everything reallocated by the end of the day.
