The other day, I showed you the sample copy of the Dragon Diaries hardcover omnibus that will be available at retailers. It looks like this:
After ordering it, though, I wondered whether the dust jacket would look better with a gloss finish. Even though the image is the same, a gloss finish can make the colours look more saturated and give more contrast. Hmm. I ordered the alternate dust jacket and it arrived last night.
It’s raining today, so I had to take pictures inside – on my stove with the light on overtop. 🙂 The matte dust jacket is on the left, on the book. The gloss one is flat and lying beneath – and reflecting the light. Even though the difference isn’t as pronounced as in real life, you can see that the colours look more vivid on the gloss dust jacket.
I took off the matte dust jacket and wrapped the book in the gloss one. Now the gloss one is on the left (you can tell by the reflection).
And here are the backs of the dust jackets, gloss on the left:
The dragon is much snappier on the gloss version, so that’s the one I’m going with.
The case laminate on the book will still have the matte finish. I like how it feels.
I took another picture of the book interior, with one of the dragon line drawings on the first page of a chapter. You can see the dragons flanking the page number in the footer in this image, too.
This edition will be available during the Kickstarter campaign to be drop-shipped to you. The buy links at the portals are starting to populate for October delivery, so I’ll be adding them to the website today. You’ll be able to get this edition earlier via Kickstarter and also order the campaign swag.
The trade paperbacks came yesterday, too, and I’ll show you them tomorrow. They are also retail editions, and will also be available early through the Kickstarter campaign.
The blingy special edition will be the last one over the threshold and might not arrive before the campaign launches. (Fingers crossed!)
I also have all the art for the character cards and luxe bookmark, but you’ll see that when the campaign launches. 🙂
