Seasons

I love the changing seasons of the year – and where I live, those changes are pretty dramatic! It’s only recently, though, that I’ve realized that my work habits and creativity change with those seasons.

September here is cool. The air changes, becoming drier and chillier. Nights can be cold. It’s time to get out the sweaters and the extra blankets! The sky changes, as well, becoming a deeper shade of blue in the daytime than it is in August. The clouds have slate bellies, which I always think of as a sign of snow. The sunlight becomes more of a golden yellow colour. The leaves change colour on the trees, too, which makes for a magnificent display of red, orange, yellow and green. The colour won’t peak until October, but the show is well on its way in September.

For me, September is a time of new beginnings and new energy. I start new projects in September, diving into them with an enthusiasm that’s hard to match the rest of the year. I am really productive and creative in September – it’s a powerful time of year for me. I used to think that this was a kind of conditioning, the result of going back to school in September for so many years and becoming excited by the new challenges I found there. Now I think it’s the other way around. September invigorates me, no matter what I’m doing, and my love of going back to school was because it happened in September.

What about you? Do you find yourself working differently in different months and seasons? Is any particular time of year more potent for you creatively?

  1. Ah the seasons, it’s funny you should mention this Deb because after last winter my husband and I have been looking into moving to Florida. It’s not that I don’t love the seasons changing because I do, but it seems in the last few years the change is more drastic than subtle, it goes from 100º to 40º in one day and the snow from last winter will stay with me for a long time. We here in the lower Midwest are accustomed to those kinds of winters and so we in our older ages are considering moving south just like the migrating birds.
Talking about differing attitudes and such, when autumn comes the first thing I want to do is bake a pie, or cook a huge pot of chili. And of course it’s the best time to curl up with one of your books.

    1. Interesting Deb. I think the weather is becoming more violent everywhere.

As much as I enjoy visits to Florida, I don’t think I’d move there – I’d be a wreck in hurricane season. Arizona might be better, or New Mexico. Nice dry heat without drama 🙂

  2. Yes, I love that term you just coined Deb, weather without drama 🙂 great, but we were thinking of the southern part of the state only in the middle so that hurricanes wouldn’t be a big problem.
