Rafferty Powell is a shape shifter and a member of the dragon warriors called the Pyr. He is steadfast and solid and has longed for a mate. When a dragon meets his mate, he experiences something called the firestorm, the firestorm is sated when the relationship is consummated and leads to conception of the dragon’s son. Rafferty finds his firestorm and is troubled by the circumstances; the human he is to mate is from all appearances a thief. Also, the firestorm is not what he expected, he has longed for his mate and he feels that fate has given him a tarnished firestorm. With his new relationship, the world of the Pyr may change significantly and his fellow warriors may not be ready for it.
Melissa Smith is an ex-investigative reporter who is looking for justice for a friend of hers when she gets thrown into a new world with dragons. She wants to expose an evil man who just happens to be the enemy of the Pyr. She steals evidence that would put a normal man under the jail, but there is no jail that can hold a dragon. When she exposes the dragons to the human world, the Pyr is shaken, including Rafferty, but he will have to accept Melissa as she is if he is to have a successful firestorm. Of course he also has to protect Melissa from an old enemy that proves to be elusive and difficult to hold on to.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the Dragonfire series since book one. The dragons and their human mates experience a whirl wind romance that can only be sated with conception. That is liable to make a single woman think twice, not to mention the discovery of dragons and fated mates. Rafferty is one of my favorite characters so far, he is a romantic at heart and his fall is welcomed. I look forward to more stories in this series. An interesting side note is that in June 2011, a young adult spin off will be released and will star some of the children of the Pyr.
