Workshop Post-Op

, ,

I taught my workshop Saturday, but there was lots of good discussion and we didn’t get to everything. It’s funny but when I do my practice run, it always goes more quickly, probably because my dog doesn’t ask questions. (She already knows everything about publishing, you know.)

Here are some links to topics that have been previously posted in my blog here.

The first big thing we skipped was the discussion of
Literary Vs. Commercial.

For handout #2, which was about your own reading tastes – because we tend to write what we read and watch – the secret code is that having a higher number of A’s indicates an interest in commercial fiction, while a higher number of B’s indicates an interest in literary fiction. This may shape your choices in terms of what you choose to write.

The second big thing we skipped was walking through the deal of a new midlist author – Zelda – with our fictional pubisher, Good Books Inc. You can read a lot of that here in:

FAQ – Money

FAQ – More Money

FAQ – Even More Money

There was a conclusion:

The Escalator Myth

And we had no chance at the bonus rounds:

A Plot is Like A Sandwich

Houses & Blueprints

  2. Hello Deborah! I’m sure you don’t remember, but I met you while waiting for our plane to San Fran this past summer. I’ve been meaning to make it to a meeting ever since and yesterday was my first. I so enjoyed your workshop…despite the freaking jackhammering! I plan on joining the chapter and hope to make more! I’m just kinda beginning my journey, I sold a month after nationals…and all the info you gave was very timely for me!
hope to bump into you soon!

  3. Thanks both of you! I had a lot of fun yesterday.

And thanks Julie for providing the clue. I tend to remember faces better than names and was trying to figure out where I had met you before. Congrats again on your sale!

  6. Thanks Susan –

You looked a bit worried there a few times, so I’m glad to hear that you got a lot out of it.
