Holiday Prep

How are you doing with all those jobs that need to be done at this time of year? Finished your gift shopping? Your gift knitting? Decorating? Baking?

Despite my plan to do no holiday gift knitting, I did a lot of it. I think it’s all done now, barring any last minute emergencies. It was fun, as people wanted things I hadn’t knit before. Lots of new challenges and quick projects – and a bit of stash-busting too. The dining room carpet is all covered with towels and pinned-out knitting, blocked to perfection. I need to find a better solution for blocking – having to block a bunch of things in a row has revealed the weakness of this plan and of my knees. Ugh.

I still have some shopping to do, but the big puzzles are solved – it’s stocking stuffer time, which is always fun. I have wrapping to do, but that’s fun, too. The decorating is done, the tree is up and the cards are mailed, so I’m ahead of schedule on all of that. No baking as yet, although Mr. C. did get a batch of Nanaimo Bars last night, which made him very very happy. The main burst of baking will probably happen next week, right at the last minute.

How is your holiday prep coming along? Are you ahead of schedule or behind the game?

  1. The tree is up and plugged in, but not decorated. I’m wondering if I really, really have to break out the boxes of ornaments or not.

Gifts are bought, mostly. I wrapped some presents that have to be posted by Wednesday last night and I forgot how much I dislike that job. Only because it’s hard on my knees.

I’ve done some baking, but there’s a rum cake and truffles still needing to be made. And some meal planning for the long holiday weekend.

    What are Nanaimo Bars?

  2. Hubbie does the decorating. He’d put it up the first of November if he had his way. I tend to the family tradition of up on Dec 13 and down the day after Christmas (I find the tree, now naked of the gayly (sp?) wrapped presents depressing).

I buy presents all year long and stash them in the hallway closet. Usually that strategy works well, but this year I overbought for the girls, underbought for the boys.

Tried to make peanut brittle last night. It was a dismal failure. Decided I don’t need to create more job security by feeding everyone else the sweets.

So will settle for what I’ve done and tell myself it’s good. Except I do think I should make fat balls yet. Grandma’s traditional Christmas food. And yes, they make you fat! Fried bread with sugar will do that.

And Pam, yes, you have to actually put decorations on the tree if you took it out of the box and set it up.

  4. My holiday prep is madness – sheer madness. Getting things ticked off the list, finally, but my absence from the blogosphere is directly related to all the Christmas stuff I’m doing along with my shifts at the library.

Am now working on mittens for my youngest nephew and a scarf for my m-i-l!! One mitten is done and the cuff of the other is already finished 🙂
