Here’s Tanzey Cutter’s review of FALLEN. I’m not sure when it will go live on FreshFiction.com, but you can read it here now.
You know, I think she liked it!
“FALLEN – Claire Delacroix – Tor – 9780765359490 (499) – 6.99 – 384 pgs – 9/30/08 – Tanzey Cutter, reviewer, Fresh Fiction
In the year 2099, Adam Montgomery has been sent on an important mission to assist others of his kind in saving the earth. Though relinquishing his wings and the memories of his past existence seems a big sacrifice, there will be more to come. Especially when he gets mixed up with Lilia Desjardins, a shade hunter, as she’s conducting an unauthorized, clandestine investigation. In his current position as a New Gotham cop, Adam is not the most likely person for Lilia to trust.
Believing her estranged husband’s mysterious death in an old section of Gotham was not an accident, as it has been declared by New Gotham officials, Lilia Desjardins sets out to discover the truth. It’s not that she and Gid had been that close near the end; it’s the principle of the thing – and the cover-up she knows is going on in the Society of Nuclear Darwinists. Her snooping into matters better left alone has made her a target of sinister Republic forces intent on terminating her investigation – and her!
After Adam’s main contact on earth is murdered, he has only Lilia to depend on to finalize his mission – and keep him from being found out and sent to the Republic’s slave dens. As the level of conspiracy and danger ratchet ever higher around them, Adam and Lilia realize they have only each other to rely on to survive – and to save the world.
Claire Delacroix (who also writes as Deborah Cooke) stretches the boundaries of the paranormal genre with this atypical futuristic romance that’s riveting in the intensity of its plot, unique characterization and passion. I didn’t know what to expect after the unusual prologue, but I could not put it down. The milieu of FALLEN unfolded vividly and fluently, which is exactly what I’ve come to expect from this talented author’s work.”
