Guides to Fictional Worlds

One of the (many) things I’ve been working on this summer is compiling all the various details about my fictional worlds into comprehensive guides. This includes lists of characters and details about those characters, family trees and family relationships, relevant dates and events for those characters, as well as known information about the world itself and a glossary of terms.

Serpent's Kiss, a paranormal romance and Dragonfire #10 by Deborah CookeThe first of these that I began to compile was for Dragonfire. In addition to the above, that world guide includes the lore of the Pyr and their history, as well as an explanation of their powers. Since I began compiling the world guide when I was writing Firestorm Forever, it’s proving to be a bit of a slog. There’s a lot of back-and-forthing in the books and my notes to be done, and so I have an assistant helping me on this project. It still won’t be done for a while. Because many readers have asked about it, there will be a published Dragonfire companion volume, which will be released as part of the publication schedule of the new editions of the first eight books.  My assistant is also writing synopses of all of the stories and I’m adding some additional notes about the creation of Dragonfire. It’s going to be a big fat book and I’m excited about it.

Wyvern's Mate, book #1 in the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeIn contrast, the world guide for the Dragons of Incendium is evolving as the stories are written. My idea here was that I’d be more organized and avoid all this digging through the past by working in real-time. This world guide is on the Dragons of Incendium website under the tab “Guides” and it’s updated after the publication of every new book in the series. You’ll find a cast of characters and a glossary there, as well as some additional references like a Brief History of Incendium. The inclusion of these references is one of the reasons that these dragons have their own website.

On the historical side, I haven’t been nearly as organized. I have family trees compiled and available for free download in my online store—and I update those as various members of each family marry. There’s also a cast of characters for Kinfairlie that was compiled around the time I wrote The Renegade’s Heart, but beyond that, we’re talking file folders and piles of notes. I’m realizing how inefficient this is as I retrace everything I’ve said about Ross.

The Princess, book #1 of the Bride Quest series of medieval romances by Claire DelacroixIn preparing the new editions of the Bride Quest books, I had a question and unearthed my old notes—I found a map of Tullymullagh that I’d drawn! That got me to thinking about connecting my historical worlds and I wrote a blog post about that in June. The thing is that to make the worlds intersect plausibly, I need to compile world guides for my own reference.

Which explains where I am right now. I have a Dragonfire companion volume in the works. I have a Dragons of Incendium world guide on the website. I am currently creating a Bride Quest world guide and a Ravensmuir/Kinfairlie/Inverfyre world guide for my own reference. And that brings me to the question of the day—what should I do with all these world guides when they’re done?

There’s a poll below about world guides and companion volumes. I’d love if you took a moment to share your thoughts. I’ll leave it open for quite a while, since these references will take some time yet to be completed.

Don’t worry – The Dragonfire companion volume will definitely be published. The cover is done! It’s the others that I’m wondering about.

Here’s a poll about whether or not you use these volumes – and whether or not you buy them:

Here’s a poll about which series of mine for which you’d like to have a world guide:

And finally, here’s a poll about what you expect to find inside a world guide, just to make sure I don’t miss anything! There’s room for you to add suggestions.

For Libraries

My books are available to libraries!

Digital editions of my books are available to libraries through Overdrive and Bibliotheca. This includes my new releases, as well as new editions of many backlist titles. I used to upload directly to Overdrive, but now am using Pronoun (a Macmillan company) to deliver to both of these library portals. Their interface is easier for me, so new releases will appear more quickly on Overdrive than they did before. I also like their version control better.

Print editions of my books are available to libraries through Ingrams. Some of my books are also available in hard cover editions from Ingrams. You can find them on the Collectors’ Editions page here on the site.

My audiobooks are available to libraries through Overdrive and Blackstone Library. Blackstone makes physical cd’s of my audiobooks for libraries, as well as offering digital download licensing.

The Dragons of Incendium: The First Collection TODAY!

It’s release day for the collection!

The Dragons of Incendium: The First Collection including the first six works in Deborah Cooke's paranormal romance series

The Dragons of Incendium: The First Collection

Once, in the Kingdom of Incendium, there were twelve princesses of the realm, each a dragon shifter. Each fiery and passionate. Each possessed of an appetite for pleasure that only her destined mate can satisfy. Twelve men are expected in Incendium, each with special powers of his own, each with the gift to claim one dragon princess’s heart forever.

In Wyvern’s Mate, Drakina intends to fulfill her obligation as the oldest daughter by seducing her destined mate and winning her freedom. Troy’s lovemaking leaves Drakina hungry for more, until she discovers that he’s an assassin and she’s his intended victim. Will his MindBending powers condemn him in the fiery princess’s view or see him saved?

In Wyvern’s Prince, Gemma agrees to an arranged marriage with the crown prince of Regalia, to build an alliance between the two kingdoms. She expects duty, not love, but finds both when her new husband’s discredited twin brother proves to be her destined mate—but Venero has been enchanted. Can Gemma break the spell cast upon her prince or will she share his fate?

In Wyvern’s Warrior, Thalina intercepts an intruder in Incendium’s palace, allowing herself to be taken captive to learn his plan. To her delight, Acion is a highly developed android and she wants nothing more than to study him thoroughly, especially his amorous abilities—but Acion’s presence on Incendium violates the law. Will he be exterminated before Thalina satisfies her curiosity?

May Signed Book Giveaway

Last month’s signed book giveaway was for a copy of The Warrior, and the winner could choose which version she/he liked best. Our winner was Judy Miles and she chose the new edition of The Warrior as her prize. Congrats to Judy!

Wyvern's Mate, book #1 in the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeThis month, I think we need to show the dragons some love!

Our prize book this month is a signed print copy of Wyvern’s Mate, the first book in my Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances.  this is the mini-book edition—it’s about the size of a mass market paperback—and it includes both Wyvern’s Mate and the short story Nero’s Dream.

Because this was a new format for me to use, there are some pictures of this book in this blog post.

For your chance to win, please comment on this post and tell me why you’d like to be a dragon shifter. Good luck!

Edited to add – this month’s winner is Leasa Gowitt. Congrats, Leasa, and thanks to everyone who entered. Please check the June book giveaway. 🙂

Wyvern’s Warrior Mini-Book

Wyvern's Warrior, #3 of the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeNow that Kraw’s Secret is done and published, the mini-book print edition of Wyvern’s Warrior – which includes Kraw’s Secret – is also available. It’s almost the same size as the print edition of Wyvern’s Prince – 264 pages as opposed to 268. I love these cute little books!

I just approved the proof this morning, so it’s available now at Createspace. The information is perking through to Amazon and I’d expect the book to be listed as available there by the weekend. I’ve also listed it for sale in my online store if you’d like a signed copy – I won’t have copies for a week or so, but you can order anytime.

Kraw’s Secret

The next story in the Dragons of Incendium series is available! Kraw’s Secret is a short story, which should be read after Wyvern’s Warrior. It’s #3.5 in the series.

Kraw's Secret, a short story and #3.5 in the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeViceroy Kraw is invited to witness whatever prediction the ShadowCaster has brought to Incendium, along with King Ouros and Queen Ignita. Although the royal couple can make little sense of the vision shown by the strange creature, Kraw knows his family’s ancient betrayal has to finally be revealed to the dragon kings. Will the fury of Ouros be as fierce as Kraw fears? What will be the future of the viceroy?

Newsletter Series Lists

I’ve recently been exploring automated email sequences. This means that when you do something, my newsletter service automatically does something in response.

Subscribe4If, for example, you subscribe to my Knights, Dragons & Heroes monthly newsletter today, you’ll receive a sequence of four emails introducing you to me and my books. They’re spaced out, so you get one a week, and each one has a featured topic. You’ll be pointed in the direction of free reads, and my various series will be explained. You’ll also learn in the sequence about the free resources available to you (like family trees) and where to find me on social media. Finally, you’ll receive special offers to buy books directly from me in my online store. I think this is pretty nifty. Once it’s set up, the sequence launches each time (and any time) someone new subscribes to my monthly newsletter. (If you haven’t done that yet, you can subscribe right here and see this sequence for yourself!)

Once this was set up (in October), I started to think about how else I could use this feature. One of the challenging things for me is staying on top of all the things I want to read. I thought it might be useful to you to hear specifically about the series you’re following, instead of looking for updates on those books in my monthly newsletter. So, I started some subsidiary lists, each one featuring a single series.

These lists are separate from my monthly mailing list. You can belong to any combination of the lists—all of them, one of them, some of them—whatever works best for you. Not only will a new message be delivered to you when there’s a new release in the series, but you’ll get discount codes for shopping in my online store and buying directly from me.

Originally, these were set up through my online store: anyone who downloaded a sample or bought a book directly from me was added to the list. Since you might want to subscribe to one of these lists without buying a book directly from me in my online store, I’m adding sign-up links. I’d suggest that you try one first, instead of subscribing to them all, just to see if you like it.

Wyvern's Mate, book #1 in the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeThe first automated series list I set up was for the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances. If you download a sample or buy any of the books from me in my online store, you’re added to this list. It’s a growing sequence, in that each time a new title in the series is released, a new message is added to the sequence. Right now, there are three messages—one about Wyvern’s Mate and Nero’s Dream, one about Wyvern’s Prince and Arista’s Legacy, and one about Wyvern’s Warrior. The next message will be added when Kraw’s Secret is available.

Subscribe to the Dragons of Incendium series list.

Addicted to Love, a contemporary romance by Deborah CookeMy second list was set up for Flatiron Five series of contemporary romances and romantic comedies. This one has only one message right now, because only the first book (Simply Irresistible) has been published. There will be another message added when Addicted to Love is available for pre-order.

Subscribe to the Flatiron Five series list.

These two series are in progress, so once you’ve received the messages about all the books currently available, you’ll be in a waiting mode for the next release and the next message.

What about completed series? Recently, I set up a single-message campaign, which is being delivered to anyone who downloaded or bought any of the Champions of St. Euphemia books in my online store. I wanted to make sure that no one who is already reading the series missed the upcoming publication of The Crusader’s Vow. I thought this was a pretty nifty way to remind people that the series will soon be complete.

Now, I’m planning dedicated series newsletters for series that are complete, with all titles available.

Tomorrow, I’ll tell you about the first one of those, a new newsletter for my historical romances which you can join right away.

Eileen’s Review of Wyvern’s Mate

Wyvern's Mate, book #1 of the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah Cooke, in audioHere’s a new review from Eileen for Wyvern’s Mate, which she listened to in audio.

“Both Troy and Drakina have every reason to succeed in their individual quests–the stakes are high on both sides.  Drakina is intrigued by Troy and decides to draw out her time with him–she has 48 hours. Troy is captured by not only her beauty, but her spirit and finds joy in her dragon form.  So what to do?  Can either do what they set out to do?

I hope you enjoy this story where galactic justice just may prevail and two souls find true love.”
