Recently, I came across some lovely editions of Georgette Heyer’s work. They’re in trade paperback from HQN, each with a foreward written by a contemporary romance author. As I was admiring them, I realized that I’d never actually read Georgette Heyer.
This came as a bit of a shock to me, especially as I enjoy Regencies so much. So, I scooped up four of the books and am currently enjoying Venetia. What a wonderful book! I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on these stories all this time.
How about you? Have you discovered a classic read lately or an established author whose work you’ve somehow overlooked?

Er….Shakespeare. Not so much that I ignored him, just that I had so much trouble *getting* his plays when I read them. So, I took a class last year at the semi-local Community College that helped tremendously.
I have read some Heyer because of the daughter who is a great fan. I really enjoy her too, but I’m not a big regency reader.

I agree, Gina. I’ve been enjoying Shakespeare much more in the last ten years. Recently I read SHAKESPEARE BY ANOTHER NAME, which argues the case that the Earl of Oxford wrote the plays (similar premise to the movie Anonymous, but no bloodlink with the queen). It was a fascinating read, because the author traced the life of the Earl (his travels, marriages, etc.) and connected that to lines and events in the plays. Made me want to read the whole canon again, so I started.
This will take a while. 🙂

I read “The Phantom of the Opera” earlier this year and loved it! I was lucky too because I’ve never seen the musical (though it’s an Andrew Lloyd Webber piece, so I could probably guess how it goes…)
I also recently started “Anna Karenina” but it starts out kind of slow, so we’ll see how far I get. 🙂

As it happens, I read Heyer’s ‘Grand Sophy’ just last week and had a wonderful time. :-] I’m glad to know others are being republished!
I loved reading Georgette Heyer when i was a youngling, and it is the perfect kind of book to bring comfort and respite from recent national events.

GRAND SOPHY is one I intend to look for, Diana. I guess that VENETIA was one of her later books. I enjoyed it a great deal. Now I’m on to BATH TANGLE.
